hmmmm, You should not get that when logged in.

I can't remember how I stumbled upon this but I thought, "Great! More options for the mess that is Nintendo 64 emulation!" and when I noticed the date I submitted it on Reddit. I didn't expect such a negative reception! I was just trying to help spread the word. I don't think what you are doing is a bad idea at all. Project 64 1.6 was a great emulator for it's time and I have heard several people say they still use it and recommend it so it seems as logical a place to start as any. I wish you the best of luck!

Thank you @RadeonUser for your response in trying to clear up the goal of your project. What are the suggested plug-ins for this emulator or do you prefer users to try different plug-ins to test the emulator?

Let me tell you a little about my N64 journey the last six years.

2012, I remember I was still using Project64 1.6 along with Nekokabu's Unofficial RDB at the time which worked quite well and I think I used Glide64 also.

I was reading about this and was starting to get curious about what would come next for Project64.
1.7 started awake my interest until I found out that it was Beta and not released to the public, only for paying supporters.

Damn, that's the first I thought and would this become standard for all emulators now?

Well I wanted 1.7 but didn't have the funds or the means to get it back then so I found a leaked version of 1.7, 1.7.0.50-rev23 which I have used ON/OFF up until 2016/2017

Then there was this RetroArch core made by Loganmc10 called GLupeN64 which was pretty good until he dropped it earlier last year.
It was Mupen64Plus 2.5 + GLideN64.

During 2015-2017 I also used various 2.x builds of Project64 + GLideN64 with mixed results, BSOD's, crashes and instabilities.

Autumn 2017 I discovered a GFX plugin called angrylion-rdp-plus which is a multi-threaded conservative fork of the original angrylion and it is a dream.

I use this with builds of Project64 from here today and must say that this might just be the way I'm going to play N64 games from now on.

I realize this would have been a lot more relevant all those years ago but things happened that were out of my control.

I mainly came on here to answer some posts from reddit but I was pleasantly surprised to see a comment from someone!
So thanks for making my day on that  ;)


I will answer a bit more on what PJ64 1.6.1 Legacy is and was.
This was supposed to be a side-by-side release with Jabo's plugins, an improvement of support for games and fixes for the GUI that were never addressed.
He didn't agree where the project was going -- He's very protective of Zilmar's work and pretty much lost it when I started hacking away at things.
(Yes Jabo, this is clearly what I recall and I doubt very much it's what happened. If memory serves you just wanted to leave things in a finished state. However, like you well know, my perception of reality is 'better'  :D )

Most of the recent work I did would have been more relevant back when SSDs were not commonplace (Try loading the entire rom set on a classic mechanical drive and you'll see a difference from 1.6, I can't comment on 2.x as I don't use that version).

So what this is mainly aimed at being is 1.6 with a bit of polish, game fixes, and a more responsive user interface.
There's still quite a bit of work I will be doing to update the way PJ64 feels, it simply hasn't aged well.

For what is provided, that's a simple zip file.
There are no installers whatsoever.
The exe is compressed with Free UPX.
You should be able to download it WITHOUT registering (If you cannot, let me know but I've tried it out myself as a guest just now).

If you are more than happy using the latest PJ64 2.x stick with it, it's likely more updated and runs better.
If you find yourself using 1.6 for whatever reason then this is aimed at you, as a possible replacement.

The name was chosen because I felt PJ64's "Legacy" had been tarnished and as a long-time user and beta tester that was unacceptable to me.

So those of you who are interested.

Please help me make this better by providing feedback.
Please let me know what you want that will make things better.

Project 64 1.6.1 Dev / Goal for 2018

Hey everyone!

Just leaving a message here to let everyone know what I plan to do this coming year (Likely 3-4 months but hopefully less!)
I've been going through the code trying to make it less crash-prone for plugins like Icepir8's and have been finding code that isn't acceptable.

So I am going into code-review mode and will try to fix up things I notice are wrong.
This doesn't mean I won't look at posts or put out small fixes here and there but it means the majority of my energy will be going into reading, understanding, and replacing code as needed.
This may be as simple as making very similar code into a function (There's a lot of code copied and pasted around) or may involve more of an overhaul than I want to do.

The end-goal? Stability.
It is my vision to have PJ64 never crash to desktop.
If it ever runs into a problem (It can't be helped after all!) it should fall back into a stable state (The rom browser for example) without losing everything.

I will periodically add to this thread when I have time or have actually accomplished something.

I just approved 13 members that were awaiting the confirmation e-mail.
If you're still around I'd like a bit more information, such as did you get the e-mail confirmation?
Was it maybe sent to your spam folder?
Did you not get it at all?
Did you get the e-mail but it didn't work for some reason?

I'll be taking a weekly look at the member list and approve where I feel is warranted and if I end up approving someone that ends up being a spammer I'll just get rid of them.
I would like very much to update the board but Gent tells me we are using some old plugins that don't work with the new board.

Edit: Too much file stuff lately! I called it a spam directory.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a build out this morning but I've been trying to track down the Cheat Search dialog one since last night.
I did fix the issue with the drop down menu being blank but I figured I would hold back until I had both complete.

This needs to be updated in the manual as default and in full detail.
What we need is some input from Azi here as to best describe each Tab/Function/Options.
At the moment we still have for the old default:


Audio Plugin Configuration

This page covers configuration of the default Project64 audio plugin - Jabo's DirectSound v1.5. For information on other plugins please consult the relevant authors' documentation.
 
  • "Volume"
  • "Audio Logging"
  • "Sync game to Audio"


Points
  • The audio plugin does not include an audio emulator! It must be used in conjunction with the RSP plugin. The RSP plugin must be configured with "send Audio Lists to Audio Plugin" disabled or the audio plugin will receive no audio data and hence you will hear no sound!
  • The audio plugin uses a fixed audio buffer, size chosen carefully by the author.


"Volume"
 
  • default setting: 100%
  • generally recommended setting: user preference!
This control was added in v1.5 mainly as a way to balance Project64 against other applications. It's function should be fairly obvious. You can use the Up and Down arrows and Page Up and Page Down keys and Mousewheel as shortcuts. Setting all the way down is equivalent to muting the emulator.
This setting is global (applies to all ROMs), takes effect instantly, and is saved in the registry.
 

"Audio Logging"
This control has two buttons, Start and Stop.
If you want to save all the audio produced by the emulator to your hard drive, press Start. You will be prompted for a path and filename. You can close the dialog. When you want to stop logging, go back to the dialog and press Stop. Don't forget to stop recording, or you may get a corrupt .wav file!
Notes:
 
  • You can record for as long as you have hard drive space available.
  • You cannot record particular parts of the audio (background music, sound effects etc.)
  • Note that the file written is a simple waveform (datarate similar to a CD), so it uses a large amount of hard drive space.
  • You could edit the resulting file in any standard waveform editor, compress it to MP3 format, etc., as you wish.


"Sync game to Audio"
 
  • default setting: disabled
  • generally recommended setting: disabled
If disabled, the audio plugin will output the audio stream as it is supplied. There will be some degree of "popping" or clicking" as the core speed fluctuates slightly, but the core (and hence gameplay) is not interrupted. The benefits of this - smoother gameplay - probably outweigh the drawbacks for you.
If enabled, the audio plugin will stall (momentarily stop) the emulator when audio data is being supplied faster than it can output cleanly. This will prevent some artifacts, but will have a slight to severe effect on the peformance of the whole system. There are three degrees of severity to the side effects that enabling Sync can produce, which applies depends entirely on the game:
 
  • slight (I would think noticeable to most people) loss of smoothness of the whole system* (e.g. Mario64, Zelda, most games)
  • lowering in VI/s (reduction in speed of whole system*) from the normal value (e.g. 60FPS) to a new value (e.g. 45FPS) (e.g. Ridge Racer, Mario Party 2)
  • complete stall of the whole system* (e.g. Turok2)
*"whole system" means the whole emulator, not your PC!
Notes:
 
  • If you enable "Sync game to Audio" you will not be able to use the speed limiter disable (System menu, shortcut F4) as a "fast forward".
  • "Sync game to Audio" is very useful in one particular situation: if you want a clean logged audio file (see below).
  • In v1.5 the "Sync game to Audio" setting is saved per-ROM in the registry.
